    I've got a 1998 with 25K miles... runs great but I'm looking at a 2000.
Mainly cause it's yellow and I love that color on the VFR. It's also
got only 15Kmiles and better maintainance.

Does anyone have experience with these two versions... Will there
be a loss of power/mpg with the Catalytic converter system?

Just guessing, theres probly a couple horses sucked up by the cat. And theres extra weight. You could install a 98-99 header in its place if you want. Or some guys install Motad headers too.

Can you buy the new one before selling your current ride? Swap the pipes and sell your 98 with a cat installed on it?

I have an 01 and have yet to feel that it lacks power....

I have absolutely no complaints about the power of my 5th gen.
I have not ridden a 4th gen, though.

I don't think I can swap out the pipes, the bike would be looking
for an O2 sensor and that would screw something up.

I haven't gotten to test ride the 2000 yet cause the guy wants
to see cash first... Guess I gotta come up with cash and try it out.

00-01 doesn't have an idle lever either.

As far as I know the Gen 5 Mk2 had the ECU tweaked to allow no loss of HP due to the Cat and Fuel economy was a little better due to the O2 sensors allowing lean out when cruising.

Got it last night. Yellow...and great condition.

The 2000 is actually a bit quicker... although it could just be
my imagination.... It's got a two-bros pipe, sounds Awesome,
my 98 had a Yoshi pipe.. maybe that's all the difference.

No choke on the 2000 eh?
