we had a public holiday this weekend just past and we took our boy to the miniature steam train working day. As hes a major 'Thomas the tank engine' fan this was right up his alley. i have to say that i was pretty impressed with the steam trains, they are exact replicas of the real thing and the sound they make is incredible. They make all of the sounds you'd expect to hear from a full size one!. from an engineering perspective i could really appreciate the work that went into making these, in most cases they are hand built from scratch-lots of lathe time and casting etc... and all work on steam boilers, mostly coal or wood fired like the real thing.
my boy went nuts and rode em all day:ncb:
you can see them in a couple of the shots, he has the blue beanie hat on and my wife is behind him. We had a great day out and it was something differant to do on fine winters day.

Working small scale stuff of big stuff sure is a sight to see, never mind ride. That must have been a blast. Awesome! I want the one that looks like the Hudson.

Hmmm....the hudson.....would that be the big black beast? it certainly was the 'bad ass' of all the trains. kinda reminded me off a ZZR 1400 for some reason?

anyway jas, these run every sunday, so when you finaly make it down here
we can book in a visit. be it for the big kids or little ones

cool little trains. i have always loved steam trains since i was a kid. even to this day i think they are such a cool work of mechanical wonder. to think how back in early 1900's they were able to make them as big as they did and actually work with the technology they had back then ( no computer designs or computerized lathes) it amazes me.

I love the old trains too! Those replicas are awesome. I would love to take my God son on one of those. I don't think he could handle the car ride though :)

When I was in high school, an old steam engine used to run right in my back yard every weekend. It was cool to hear that huge thing come barreling down the tracks. Those things just ooze power and machismo. If any of you are in the know, the Blue Mountain/Reading Railroad is what I'm referring to. One of the better known lines from what I know.

Anyone ever see the small replica of a Ferrari or something that a guy made? The engine ran and everything! Cool stuff.
