I replied to an ebay add regarding a very cheap 2 month old Triumph Thunderbird Storm that is supposedly in Perth West Australia. This is the reply I got

    Message body
I'm in a military base now. We are training, getting ready for Iraq .
I'm only allowed to check my email twice a day. I hope you can
understand that we will have to stick to email for now.
Being in the army has some advantages. I can ship it very cheap. I will
take care of the shipping charges, like I said in my first email. I
think I can have it there in 3-4 working days. I am a member of the eBay
buyer protection program and using this service you will get a 5 days
testing period after delivery(starting the day you receive the moto).
During that 5 days testing period I will not be getting any money. You
can choose to cancel the agreement.
In this case, PayPal will give you a full refund, and I will get my moto
    back, all on my costs.
I would like to know if this is reasonable and if you have decided to
buy the moto, please confirm your PayPal e-mail for the following
    instructions and how this works.
    Best regards,
    Alexandra Corones

Bit disappointed with this, I told him I would fly to Perth with the cash and then I would ride it back to Melb, it is only 4,000ks. Strange how this bike got to Perth with QLD rego and only 2,000ks on the clock

The dude making the big pesos on this one is the dude selling the "How To" to the mullets who buy the scam.

Some of the ads are better than others.. Saw one on Craigslist for a Kawasaki. Great pix very detailed, cutom paint, super clean bike, farkles galore, the headers and can were worth more than the asking price for the bike. SOS of somebody going to war...

The usual clue is poor spelling and odd sentence construction. Not as bad as SOW but much in the same vein.

    "I'm in a military base."

The "I'm in the military overseas" lead in isn't always a scam. I sold a runner + parts bike a few years ago. The first reply I got was a "I'm in the military overseas, I'm interested in buying" text. I thought that was a bit different having a buyer try it, but still thought it would entail me fronting a transaction fee or some nonsense so I ignored it. The next day I got a text from a different number, was a family member a few towns over contacting me on behalf of the soldier. They mentioned paying cash upfront. A quick phone call confirmed it wasn't a scam, and I gave a little apology for ignoring the first reply explaining the "I'm in the military" line is a standard scam opener. I delivered the bikes and got my money.

Norm posted the message body he received. The first sentence is "I'm in a military base". It could be that this is a machine translation of a real sale by some dude who only speaks a dialect found in Western East Timor. IMO it's a scam.

Having been "in" the military mself I was never in a military base. A couple of nurses and one Colonels daughter but those are stories for another time.

After I offered to fly over with cash his reply was "I'm on a military base I have told you the terms and conditions". I can't repeat the email I sent back to him but lets say it wasn't too plesant

I was the target of a different scam when I was selling my wife's Mini Cooper. We got an email from an overseas buyer offering to PayPal the money plus extra to cover shipping, and for me to pay the buyer's shipper direct. Apparently the way this works is I pay over the shipping fee to this other party, then the whole transaction gets reversed through PayPal by the buyer, and I have lost the "shipping" money. Google is your friend in these circumstances as most scammers use the same body of text when they bait the hook. Was actually fun playing with the "buyer" once I knew what the game was.
