Does anyone who lives around, or has been to Grand Marais, MI know if route 58 through Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore off the shores of Lake Superior, is a good motorcycle road? Any experience with it?
58 is decent, but it goes in and out from the shore quite a bit. Only way to get closer at certain points is to take old logging roads...that means riding a dualsport/dirtbike (the best way to see the UP, eh!) If you have not, take some extra time and stop at Tahquamenon Falls. It is no Niagra, but it is pretty neat just the same. This would require some backtracking if you are starting from Grand Marais, however. Go west at Paradise (continuing on 123 going west)...or you could combo it, and drive straight up 15 or so miles to "WhiteFish Point" to check out the awesome view of Lake Superior, check the the lighthouse, gift shops, grab some grub, etc. To get some of the cooler roads, you should head up past Marquette to the "Keweenaw" Penisula. You can take 41 up to the "tip" at Copper Harbor... then take the 26 along the northern shore back. This combines with the 41. Take that south to the 203 for another sightseeing sidetrip. Then you could take the 41/26 south, till the 41 splits off, and you continue on the 26 to the 38 to "Ontonagon". From there take the 64 right into the "Porkies" (Porcupine Mountains State Park). If you want to do a little hiking, you can then hike up to the "lake of the clouds." Keweenaw Copper Harbor Porcupine Mtns Lake of the clouds Just a few ideas of many. The "Pictured Rocks" are a sight to see. You may have to take a little dirt here and there to get to some nice secluded viewpoints. So quiet and peaceful....you will love it. Starting out in the pouring rain in St Iggy. Dried up a bit on the old logging roads. Beautiful Lake Superior not far from Tahquanmenon Falls Old Quarry ruins. Good news...I found Fred Flintstone's house! Nice digs fred! Giving her a bath Abandoned RACO airfield near Brimley, MI (great place for a top speed run with a cool trianglar airfield pattern). Here is the runway pattern. Base was closed in '72. Careful, on one section of runway (closest to the hanger) they put a concrete lip to discourage drag racing. Other side had no lip however. WhiteFish Point Anyways, I digress. Let me know if you have any questions.
Wow. great! Thanks for al lthe info! I'm still debating whether or not i'll be heading up to Kewweena peninsula that air strip looks rad!!!
