    Hi...
I have a particular dislike of frames trying to look like alloy when they're not, so I am thinking of painting mine black.
I mocked up a library pic to compare...

    any thoughts chaps?

For me, black frames on VFs can look pretty decent if executed well and tied in with a couple other component color changes.

On that particular model with black wheels and fork lowers, it simply works.

    Go for it.

Cheers Cap'n - sat alongside my NS and TL which both have alloy frames, I think the VF frame looks wrong.
I will be going black - there's a joke there for someone.... :)

Yeah...the frame needs attention so full stripdown. it's been sat patiently waiting for me to finish other projects so just started - getting the carbs off was fun!

Awesome. Paint or powder coat? A good paint job is still very durable and way easier to deal with the aftermath like masking issues. Do the swingarm too if you paint, that would look awesome blacked out with the frame. Maybe mask off the raised ridge on the side of the swingarm for a brushed accent touch.

+1 on the black frame. The painted silver never looked that good to me. I agree with Capt. Do the swingarm. It is about the only part on my 750 I am not in love with, since my frame was powder-coated gun metal, well and the red seat..lol

I'm leaning towards paint - had a couple of issues in past with powder. Like the swing arm suggestion - thanks for that - think it would look really good!

I don't mind some of my silver painted steel frames, but when something is aluminum, it gets a pass in my book being silver.

In my experiences, it's the Powder Coat Triangle:

    Good----------Fast

    -------Cheap-------

    Pick any none

Rogue, your stuff looks great. Glad it worked for you.

I'm leaning towards paint - had a couple of bad experiences with pwder coat cracking off under nuts and bolts.

I must have had cheap - certainly wasn't good! I had a Z1000 frame done years ago, and on reassembly it cracked and flaked off on nearly every engine mounting - needless to say - not gone down that road again.
Hopefully I was just unlucky that time. Sounds like other people have a good opinion.

Agreed with doing the swingarm if you are doing the frame black.

My frame and swingarm were done semi-gloss black powder coat. The forks and a lot of other bits I painted. Just pretend the rest of the bike is red/white/blue and it should give you a decent idea of what it'll look like.

If you go paint (I've done a few), consider a single stage industrial paint like an "Imron". they're inexpensive, spray very well, they don't produce runs very easily and they're super durable.

On the swing-arm, for painting, consider epoxy coating it first, it helps adhesion alot on Aluminium.

    Just my 2 cents (penneth)

Just noticed that your V&H pipe is the same/similar to the one on my '86 GSXR - same vintage
